Most of us are consumed by the kids, jobs, bills, and laundry before we even consider the magnitude of our lifetime relationship with our spouse. What do you think? Because I know we don't sit around asking ourselves these hard questions until it's too late. When I was going to counseling years ago when our marriage was on the rocks, my counselor told me that most marriages don't survive after seeking help for counseling because one or both parties waited too long to reach out for help. The damage to the marriage was too far gone. Hearts had been stripped of any possible threads of hope. Minds had become focused on how to survive, just getting through the day. That's not a life worth living. And you don't have to be in that position. The K.I.S.S. ~ Make it matter!  Your marriage matters. But the question is... What are you bringing to the table? When dating, all you had to worry about was getting your stuff together. But then when you said "I do," there were more lives involved in the every day, which complicated it.  Yet, we still operate as if we are dating for most things. Now, there are some subtle changes that we make. But we still get stuck in our ways of WIIFM (What's In It For Me). Great satellite radio station if your life is only about you. But something tells me that's not the case. It definitely was not the case for me; a husband and five children. Make it matter. Lead with a foundation of:
- ACCEPTANCE. When you accept someone, you give him/her space to grow.
- FORGIVENESS. No one is perfect; you, me, or our spouses. So we need to lead our relationship with forgiveness, not judgment.
- LOVE. Let unconditional love rule your days. Serve instead of expecting. Expectations only ground you in a corner and minimalize your sweetheart. Love opens the heart to grow bigger and deeper.
