It's never too early to start building a strong foundation in who they are as a person, a child of God, and one created on purpose for a purpose. In order to do this, that foundation must be built on trust and open communication. Why do you think presence is so vital in relationships, in life? The K.I.S.S. ~ Connect to the heart of your child! This means that when you're present, actively listening, and watching and observing your child, you make time to talk and connect with them, creating a safe and loving environment where they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. Now that doesn't mean you give them permission to get whatever they want and walk all over you. You are still the parent. You must do what's right for your child and the season you're in as a family.
- Heart-to-heart conversations with your child. This can be done through a regular family meeting or during a designated "heart talk" time each week. During these conversations, it is important to actively listen, to tune in to your child, and validate their feelings, even if you disagree with them. This helps your child feel heard and understood, which is crucial in building trust and connection.
- Teach them to understand and manage their emotions. This can be done by teaching them about different emotions and how to express them in healthy ways, as well as helping them to develop coping skills for when they are feeling overwhelmed. Remember, too, you've got to model healthy emotional expressions and behaviors. This means being aware of your own emotions and how you express them and being intentional about taking care of yourself emotionally.
- Develop a deeper understanding of their own worth and value. This comes from being a child of God. It's knowing the love and grace of God. Instill the belief in the love and grace of God.
Connecting to the heart of your child is not going to be easy. Why? Because you have to think beyond your responsibilities. It's not just the dinner, dishes, and dogs.
