Our children have a way of pushing our buttons. They get under our nerves and keeping your cool can become the battle. It's exhausting. It's draining. You're playing referee. Nothing is accomplished when you and your child is battling against one another. Part of this is human nature. Our ego says we want to be right. You are raising a child to be who she/he was created to be. That's a huge responsibility. A huge undertaking! It's hard for us to understand what raising a child really entails. We think we know. But until you have the child, the reality doesn't kick in. Keeping your cool can be mesmerizing. Parenting itself can be overwhelming. Am I doing it right? What can I be doing differently? It's crazy! Sometimes you wonder how you get through the day. Keeping your cool becomes easier when you focus on your role as a parent, not their best friend. You are like a coach (American Football or Fûtbol). You are setting the boundaries, the rules, the do's and don'ts. As they get older, you begin to groom and guide them. They are saying what they're feeling, but not hearing what they're saying. The connections are not being made. You are helping them connect the dots, their life dots. How can you keep your cool? The K.I.S.S. ~ Manage your reaction to respond in love!

1. Be present.
2. Listen intently.
3. Don't fast forward in the conversation.
4. Take a time out.
5. One step at a time.
