Police say they have a lot of work to do to ensure people make it click.
Stats released to Newstalk ZB show in the past decade, the number of fines handed out to motorists for failing to wear a seatbelt has almost halved.
During that same period, the number of deaths, serious injuries and crashes where a driver or passenger was not wearing a seatbelt has either stayed stable or increased.
National road policing manager Superintendent Steve Greally told Mike Hosking they have to do better in this space.
“The trick is, how do we get the message across to people to convince them of the importance of wearing a seatbelt. There’s so many reasons people don’t wear them, it’s amazing.”
